History What makes this Matt different from the original version is that he is a she. Born to a Irish mother and American father in Detroit, Matt lost her mother at birth, leaving her father to try and raise the child on his own at the same time as maintaining a job and getting enough money to support him and his young daughter. Despite the laws on childcare this meant Matt was frequently left alone and when her father was around he was usually tired, having little time to play with his daughter. By the time she was four she'd taken to wandering the neighbourhood, hanging out with local pickpockets and other poor children to whom devious behaviour was a form of entertainment. It was this experience that enabled her to hide from the police and social services on the streets for a whole week after her father was killed in a hit and run accident. She was taken to an orphanage where she spent three months causing trouble and trying to run away, unwilling to trust her new caregivers and finding it hard to get along with the other children. During this time however, a teacher at the orphanage began to notice the scruffy girl's intelligence, far above average for her age and since the girl wasn't fitting in there he decided to make a call to another orphanage in England, the Whammy House. Barely a week later a man named Roger came to pick her up, explaining that he was taking her to a special orphanage where people as intelligent as her were given the chance to expand their minds and be taught at a higher level than a normal child, and ultimately have a chance at succeeding the worlds most famous detective, L. At the time she didn't think she had much choice in the matter and hating the place where she was now, agreed to go to England. However just like the previous orphanage, she failed to fit in. The children here made fun of her tomboyish attitude and looks, leading to them shortening the alias of 'Matia' that she was given to 'Matt', a name she gladly adopted and still uses to this day. Withdrawing from the other children and their taunts she took refuge in playing video games and hiding away indoors. The goal of becoming L had no appeal to her, she had no real interest in following in the footsteps of the other children's idol. That is until a new boy came along called Mello, brash and loud, for some reason the blonde took an interest in her one day and dragged her outside to play. The two spent the day together, having fun, two who didn't fit in well with others finding a unique friendship with each other, and for Matt, the first real friendship she'd ever experienced. At the end of the day when they were called in one of the teachers referred to her as a girl, surprising Mello, who confessed he'd thought her a boy at first, considering her name was Matt and the fact she didn't look or act remotely girly. After he left for the night she worried over these words, maybe then, Mello wouldn't want a girl as a friend? Maybe he'd only played with her that day because he thought she was a boy. To that end she abandoned any pretense of acting girly, fully embracing her identity as a tomboy and even trying to push it further, acting as boyish as possible to be the friend Mello wanted and not lose this new friendship. This was the way she lead her life until she was thirteen, following behind Mello loyally. It all came crashing down though on the night when Mello was informed that L was dead, without a word to her he left. Leaving Matt alone at the orphanage and epset at the fact he'd left her without even a goodbye. Angry and saddened she didn't stay long, the moment she turned sixteen and legal she too left, using her skills to find work and even get money illegally by lifting it off other peoples bank accounts. The lessons the orphanage had taught her to avoid criminals now being put to use to ensure she didn't get caught as one. So it was after years of trying to find Mello and failing she received a phone call from the blonde calling her to his aid after he was caught in an explosion. She helped him get better, her relief that he was alive and recovering enough to push away her resentment at him abandoning her previously, once again she took up the role of being his friend and also his sidekick, agreeing to help him track down and capture Kira. Mello was grateful, if saddened upon finding out about her crush on him and being unable to return those feelings himself. However he couldn't afford to turn her away, since she was th eonly person he had left he could rely on. At the time Matt was taken, she and Mello were discussing plans to kidnap Kira's spokesperson Kiyomi Takada, and she's not happy about being pulled away at such an important time. Personality Seemingly laid back, smart mouthed and happy to avoid conflict when possible, Matt seems like your average teenage girl at first glance. Easily bored without a game in her hands and quick to become short tempered when deprived of nicotine. She's not very social, preferring to keep to herself and avoid the outdoors, her adoration of technology meaning she doesn't like activities outside the vicinity of four walls and a screen, though she enjoys messing with engines as well. However despite the technological obsesson she does still have a small liking for cute things, though she tries to hide it. Since arriving in Econtra she has grown in confidence and is no longer uncomfortable in her gender, learning to embrace it rather, but at the same time she is more wary of intimacy except for a couple of people. Her previous relationship with Mello (as well other things)leaving its mark on her. Appearance 5'5 with short red hair and murky green eyes, Matt has a skinny, small chested body which is mostly hidden behind baggy clothing. Her curves are angular and not a perfect example of feminity but she still has a certain prettiness to her. Yellow lensed goggles are always worn over Matt's eyes except when she's indoors. Stripes are a personal favourite when it comes to shirts, alongside baggy jeans, a fur lined vest and heavy boots. She also wears black leather gloves over her hands. Abilities/Strengths/Weaknesses Abilities/Strengths: An expert hacker, Matt can use pretty much any technology presented to her with a minimal amount of time to familiarize herself with it. A genius raised in an orphanage where all children were groomed to be possible replacements for the great detective L she also has good deductory powers and a wide area of knowledge of many different subjects including forensics and criminal psychology. She can use guns to a certain extent, though she is not an expert marksman. Weaknesses: Not the most physically fit of people to start with, Matt is further hindered by the fact she's been a heavy smoker since the age of 14, any strenuous exercise tends to result in breathing problems for her. But that relationship has left a lasting mark on Matt. Explosivenature: (OU!Mello) A Mello who she grew to like a lot and trust, but who died in the second attack on Econtra by the Entropi, something Matt feels bad about for not being able to prevent.
